Several of the selections from my most requested party songs list are proof of the power of guitar to make people move. If you’re organising an event for a guitar-loving crowd, here are some great additions to your playlist.
1/ WALK THIS WAY – RUN DMC FEAT. AEROSMITH
In this historic, genre-bridging song, Aerosmith’s classic rock guitar riffs prove to be a worthwhile match for the beats and bars laid down by seminal mix masters Run DMC. As two of the biggest artists in the world masterfully poke fun at the creative rivalries between their genres, the result is an all-time awesome jam for electric guitar heads and beat chasers alike. A guaranteed hit in any event for guitar lovers, Walk This Way is a playful, still standing challenge for more collaborations between two of the biggest genres in music. The Steven Tyler vocal is stunning!
2/ SMOOTH CRIMINAL – ALIEN ANT FARM
If you’re going to cover a masterpiece by the King of Pop, you better have an idea of how to stand out from the hundreds of Michael Jackson covers already out there. Out of the different artists who’ve covered his songs, Alien Ant Farm was the first to rework the infectious ‘80s synth bass notes from Smooth Criminal. And in the process of using an overdrive pedal to channel Michael Jackson’s gritty energy, the band effortlessly bridges ‘80s pop dance music with the noughties’ nu-metal sound. The result is not only an infectious air guitar anthem but one of the most iconic cover songs of all time.
3/ BACK IN BLACK – AC/DC
You can’t talk air guitar anthems without AC/DC. As one of the loudest bands in classic blues-rock, AC/DC is responsible for a ton of hard-hitting songs. And out of their different hits, Back in Black is not only the most influential, but is also arguably the most welcome on any dance floor. Apart from being a fixture in air guitar parties, this song was a powerful anthem of rebirth for the band. Following one of the most tragic events in rock history, this was the song that assured AC/DC’s fans and critics that they were indeed Back in Black.
4/ MONKEY WRENCH – FOO FIGHTERS
While this song managed to only climb to number 12 in the UK Charts during its peak, it remains to be one of the most requested air guitar anthems of all time. If you’re looking for the perfect song to instigate a good old, high-energy mosh pit, it doesn’t get any better than the Foo Fighters’ Monkey Wrench. While the popular band has many energetic rock songs from their 27 years in the game, Monkey Wrench is where they really let loose – with tons of opportunities for air guitar moshing on the dance floor.
5/ SMOKE ON THE WATER – DEEP PURPLE
Probably the first song you learned on electric guitar, the opening riffs from Smoke on the Water have been buzzing in every rock fan’s ear since 1972. And to this day, those riffs and the solos that follow still feel and sound fresh, making the song a great discovery for any young guitar fan. Likely the most balanced song on this list in terms of energy and feel, Smoke on the Water is a great way to either start or cap off an air guitar party!
