How TikTok has affected the music scene

The social network TikTok is changing how we discover music. It's turning unknown, or once-forgotten artists into viral sensations and has changed the way we listen to music forever!

In just a few short years, TikTok has revolutionised the way we discover and listen to music.  The social media giant has become a major player in the music industry, influencing the popularity of songs and artists like never before.

One of the biggest ways TikTok has affected the music industry is through the creation of viral trends and challenges. These trends often involve using a specific song in a lip sync or dance video, which can lead to a massive increase in streams and popularity for the song. This has helped launch the careers of many up-and-coming artists and has also brought new life to older songs that may have otherwise gone overlooked.

Some examples…

As a DJ who literally spends too much time on TikTok, it’s amusing to see groups of people reacting and dancing to a song that I know is massively popular on the social media platform.  There are some songs that were really popular many years ago that up until recently just sat in a pile of once-loved anthems.

Such songs include:

  • Fleetwood Mac – Dreams
  • Matthew Wilder – Break My Stride
  • Billy Ocean – Red Light Spells Danger
  • Nancy Sinatra – These Boots Were Made For Walkin’
  • Blondie – Heart Of Glass

The Fleetwood Mac song, for example, went hugely viral on TikTok because some dude (who happened to have 3.1 million subscribers) used it as the backing track to a video of him drinking some juice whilst on his skateboard.  Next thing you know, the song’s streaming figures on Spotify, etc. go through the roof and then the song ended up back in the music charts!

The Billy Ocean song is huge right now, and all because some guy dances to it wherever he just happens to be…Tesco, B&Q, outside a food truck by the side of the road, literally anywhere!

How TikTok works…

In addition to helping new artists gain recognition, TikTok has also made it easier for users to discover and listen to a wide variety of music. The app’s algorithm suggests songs and artists based on users’ previous listening habits and the songs they have used in their own videos. This has opened up the doors to a whole world of music for many users and has helped expose people to new genres and styles that they may not have discovered otherwise.

TikTok has also changed the way we listen to music in general. The app’s short video format and catchy sound bites make it easy to consume and share music quickly. This has led to the rise of the “song snippet” trend, where users post short clips of a song in their videos rather than using the entire track. This has made it easier for people to share and discover music on the platform without having to commit to listening to a full song.

Overall, TikTok has had a major impact on the way we discover and listen to music. Its ability to turn songs and artists into viral sensations and its user-friendly platform has made it an essential tool for music fans and industry professionals. It will be interesting to see how TikTok continues to shape the music industry in the coming years and also how it affects dance floors at parties.

It’s a total time waster…

One thing is true though, TikTok is very sticky.  By that I mean you can’t help but go back to it, time and time again.  It’s a very clever app and the algorithm is scarily good at keeping you in front of your phone, swiping through videos for hours and hours.

Are you on TikTok?  If so, you can follow me!  There’s no dancing, or lip-syncing thankfully, just short videos of me rambling on while walking around trying to lose weight!
